Fancy saving £400 a year? Er...yeah!

£400 is a whole lotta dollar to spend on whatever you want. What would you spend £400 a year on? I asked the content team for their suggestions. A new laptop maybe? A holiday? Decorating? A cowboy training course? (We’re an odd bunch...)

So where can I find this elusive £400 then?” I hear you ask.

Simples. It’s in your freezer. Honestly.

A recent report by Sheffield Hallam University reveals that a selection of frozen food for a family would cost £15.45, but the same items bought fresh would set you back £23.25. That’s a saving of £8 – enough for a little extra treat like a bottle of nice wine/some magazines/[insert your perfect little extra treat here!].

Over the course of a year, this amounts to a saving of £405.50 – a huge amount of extra cash to splash.

In the past, the belief has been that fresh food is more healthy, but research has shown that the nutritional value of many frozen foods is just as good as fresh. Just think how freezing can lock in tastes and flavours.

Hotpoint

So, if you’re saving £400 a year on your grocery shopping, it’s a great excuse to treat your kitchen to a new freezer where you can store your frozen goodies.

I’d go with the Hotpoint HZ2022. There’s a 134 litre capacity, so you’re never going to struggle for space for your frozen pizza, broccoli, carrots, spinach, sausages, chocolate chip ice cream....you get the idea.

Remember how I mentioned that freezing can lock in flavours? Well, be sure to make use of the Super Freeze button– it makes the temperature of the freezer extremely low, so it’s ready for whatever food you throw at it when you load it up after your weekly shop.

And with an A+ energy rating, you’ll be saving even more money. In fact, this model costs less than £2.50 a month to run. Bargain indeed!

So next time you’re at the supermarket, think frozen rather than fresh. That laptop/holiday/new bedroom/shopping spree will be yours before you know it!

A chilling desire for your questions to be answered?

FAQ – No, it doesn’t stand for fantastic amazing quiches, but frequently asked questions. As I specialise in all things cool both in work and at home, I’ve taken it upon myself to answer some of the most commonly asked questions on cooling appliances.

Is it frost free?
A popular question, but one that is extremely important especially if it’s an upright freezer you’re looking at. As ice builds up over time, a non frost free appliance will consume more and more energy to overcompensate turning a high A+ rating into a low D rating, and as the king of cool this makes me very sad indeed. With frost free, you not only put an end to the days of defrosting but you can forever boast about your high energy rating among friends over dinner. I know I do. Seriously.

Are the shelves removable?
The majority of all fridges and freezers have removable shelves; pull out drawers and door shelves. Not only do these removable parts make it extremely easy to fill and clean, but you can fully clean every inch of the fridge and freezer leaving no corner unturned. It’s perfect for the ‘Monica Gellers’ like me who can’t sleep at night knowing there’s mess to be cleaned!

Is the door reversible?
The majority come with reversible doors, but unfortunately some appliances don’t. It’s more common with built in/under models and gives you the freedom to have it fit into your existing space. I’m constantly changing my mind on the layout of every room in my home, so knowing that your appliance has a reversible door means it can fit any place you want it to.

Does it have an internal light?
You don’t notice it when it’s there, yet you will when it’s gone. The internal light will illuminate your foods making it far easier to creep downstairs for a midnight snack. The traditional halogen bulbs are slowly getting replaced by a brighter and cooler LED light, which also saves on energy consumption and pennies too. Another topic to share with friends over dinner. Lights are more common in the fridge and rare to find in the freezer.

Have a burning chilling question you need answered by someone in the cooling appliance know how? Not to worry, you can either leave me a comment and I’ll get right back to you, or visit our Q&A section.

Anyone for Smegtris?

Exciting news for the lovely people at Smeg. Not only are they producing their most efficient fridges ever (A++ rated, dontchya know!), but they’re also winning awards. Earlier this month, a video created for Smeg by director Nicola Martini was the worthy winner of ‘Best Creative Idea’ at the MOVI&CO awards.

The Smeg FAB30YR fridge freezer is the star of the video. It features an Italian family making a game out of filling the 310 litre fridge freezer like they’re playing game of Tetris. They take full advantage of the practical storage features like an egg tray, bottle rack and height adjustable glass shelving. Who said refrigerating isn’t fun?!

Smeg are involved in MOVI&CO because both companies want to encourage the world of business to interact with young people, giving them the opportunities to make full use of their creativity for the development of new ideas. Smeg aren’t just about creating pretty (and highly functional!) appliances!

Smeg’s FAB range won’t let you down if you want to make your kitchen FABulous. (Teehee!)  As well as their fridge freezers, you can also create that retro vibe using their fridges, freezers, washing machines and dishwashers.

WARNING: Having a FAB model in your house will cause serious envy from visitors.

Can't find what you're looking for?

Here at AppliancesOnline.co.uk we love to help our customers find the perfect product for their kitchen. Sometimes it’s the washing machine that’s going to make the biggest savings on your electricity bill, and sometimes it’s the fridge freezer that’s going to give the perfect finish to your new contemporary kitchen.

However all kitchens are different, and many customers search our site for products that have a specific fitting, size or style (or sometimes they just want to know what really is the best washing machine or washer dryer!) We strive to make finding your dream appliance as simple and hassle-free as possible, however there are still occasions were even we can get tripped up by industry jargon.

I will be the first to admit, before I worked for AppliancesOnline.co.uk, I had no idea what a larder fridge was, or how an induction hob works or even the difference between a cooker and an oven (there was great fun made at my expense the day I asked that one!)

So to shed away the jargon and let you get on with searching for the perfect kitchen appliance, here are 4 of the slightly offbeat search terms we regularly receive, and their exact meaning.

Fridge Freezer Split –    When we talk about the fridge freezer split, we are talking about two things. Firstly, the location of the two sections (either the freezer on top, or the freezer on bottom), and secondly the percentage share for each section. For example a 50/50 fridge freezer will have two equally sized compartments for the fridge and the freezer, however a 70/30 fridge freezer would have a much larger area for the fridge, and a smaller section for the freezer.

Retro Fridge Freezer – This might seem like an odd term when you think about the advancements in appliance technology. Why would anyone want to go back 30 years to a retro fridge freezer? Well it’s simply the retro look they are hoping for, which is found in Smeg’s range of stylish fridge freezers.

Small Freezer  - This sounds pretty self explanatory, but there are four different types of small freezer available. The freestanding under-counter (that simply slides under your kitchen worktop), the table top (which can be placed on top of the counter or any other surface), the built under (which is built into your kitchen cabinet and has a furniture door attached), and the chest freezer (which sites on the floor, and opens from the top).

Semi Integrated Dishwashers – It took me a while to understand the difference between freestanding and built-in appliances, and then semi-integrated got thrown into the mix! This simply means that although the appliances is built into the unit, only part of the front is covered by a cabinet door and the rest (the appliance display) is still visible.

Are there any terms that you have spotted that have left you puzzled? Drop a comment below and we will add them to the list.
