Freezer in the garage?

How many of us just don’t have the room in our kitchen to fit all of our appliances? Well you are not alone, many of us find that storing certain appliances which don’t need to be in the kitchen can save a lot of space. Washing Machines, tumble dryers and freezers are all appliances which can often end up being stored in a utility room or garage. But how safe is it to store a freezer in a cold garage? Let’s find out…

It is important to store your freezer at the correct temperatures, which can often be overlooked as we forget that just because it is a cooling appliance does not mean that it should be stored in conditions which are too cold and will affect its performance.

Freezers come with a climate class – this is the optimum temperature which you should store the appliance whilst it is operating. Climate class is often displayed as ‘N’ or SN’. ‘N’ stands for ‘normal’ and requires temperatures between 16°c to 32°c to work efficiently. SN stands for ‘sub-normal' and requires temperatures of between 10°c to 32°c in order to correctly perform.

If the temperature in the garage falls outside of the stated temperatures for long periods of time then the appliance will not perform correctly or efficiently which means you risk your food defrosting. Make sure nothing is blocking your freezer and perhaps buy a small wall thermometer so you can keep your eye on the temperature in your garage and ensure that you are getting the most from your appliance.
