Refrigerator rules for meat and cheese

One expert has offered advice on how to store meats and cheeses.

All foods fare differently over time in the fridge and one expert has advised on some of the things to look out for.

In an article for the Journal Sentinel this week, Kathy Mangold commented on the various changes items can go through in storage which can affect how healthily a refrigerator operates.

She stated cheese is subject to mould even when it is kept in the right conditions and added that although this can sometimes be saved, it is often best to throw it away.

Fresh meat should be used within two days of being brought home if it has not been stored in the freezer and pre-packaged cooked meats - such as ham and salami should be eaten within five days.

"Remember the five-day rule from the paragraph above?" she asked. "Ditto for leftovers - one key to keeping food fresh is to make sure you've safely stowed it in the fridge within two hours of coming off the heat."

A number of fridges, such as the Lec L5526W model, come with salad crispers that can also be used to keep vegetables for longer periods of time.
