Fridges made before 1990 should be replaced with new models, it has been advised.
Carter Oosterhouse, who is the host of HGTV programmes Carter Can and Red, Hot & Green, recently recommended to readers of the Chicago Tribune that these appliances should be swapped if they were manufactured over 19 years ago.
This is because the power they waste costs more to supply than it would to pay for a brand new, energy-efficient fridge, he explained.
He also gave some other tips for those who want to cut their carbon footprint the kitchen tools leave.
Mr Oosterhouse said leftovers should be cooled before they are placed in the fridge and this appliance should be filled up to run more efficiently.
Consumers who want to purchase a new fridge-freezer may want to consider the Bosch
KIV38A51GB, which is a built-in integrated model.
It is rated A+ for energy and has 224 litres of capacity.
