Competition highlights 'best ever year for wine'

Now could be seen as a good time to consider purchasing a wine cooler, as one expert notes 2008 produced some award-worthy grapes.

Commenting on the results of the Top 100 Vins de Pays competition, chairman of the judging team Tim Atkin said there was a variety of wines worthy of note.

He added the panel - which also included television personality Oz Clarke - was treated to a selection that was even better than in previous years.

"The trophies were the best ever, both for quality and value for money and the range and diversity of the wines we chose is a match for anything produced outside France," Mr Atkin explained.

Mr Clarke and co-judge Graham Nash praised the variety of grapes emerging from lesser-known regions and Chris Hardy added it was clear 2008 had produced "a great vintage for whites and roses".

Those interested on stocking up on these award-winning wines may be interested in Whirlpool's ARC2050 - which has space for up to 111 bottles.
