Discover the CO2 emissions from your kitchen with new interactive Google Earth map

I think by now most people are aware of the danger our cars pose to the environment in terms of CO2 emissions, but for a lot of people it is still not a consideration in the kitchen. However the energy released when burning fossil fuels produces both electricity and natural gas – so pretty much powers everything in your kitchen. Although awareness of this issue is increasing with energy ratings now displayed on all new appliances, we aren’t told exactly how much damage our appliances are doing to the environment.

That is all about to change thanks to Google Earth! A team of scientists have launched a Google Earth map showing carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels broken down into the different areas and sectors responsible. At the moment the project only covers the United States, but there are plans to introduce the map across Europe.

Currently maps of data show whether people burn more gas from driving or from heating, cooling and cooking in the home in a particular area. Project leader Kevin Gurney claims that eventually the public will be able to narrow down emissions information to street and individual buildings.

Once this is possible, there will be no excuse for not investing in energy efficient kitchen appliances, so if you’re worried what dirty laundry Google’s new technology will air, maybe it’s time to reduce emissions from your household before Big Brother exposes you!
