Graduation gifts for their first home

It’s university graduation time again; out come the mortar boards, gowns and ancient looking scrolls (which is disappointingly not the degree certificate) for the pictures that will adorn the walls of grandparents up and down the country. As if the last 3 years hasn’t been expensive enough it’s tradition to buy a gift for university graduation, so rather than splashing out on a pointless keepsake, why not buy the graduate in your family a gift that will actually be of some use.

If your son/ daughter/ grandchild/ sister/ brother/ niece/ nephew etc etc  is one of the lucky graduates to get one of the few jobs out there this year and is moving away and into their first non-student-pit house, a kitchen appliance could prove to be a very useful, and highly appreciated, present. So here are our top gift ideas for graduation:

As a first time buyer/ renter, it is likely their new abode will be on the small side, but luckily there are plenty of appliances out there to cater for these types of homes! The table dishwasher is one of them; perfect if there isn’t space under counter, and although some may consider a dishwasher a luxury, it’s perfect if this is the only way the dishes will actually get washed! Or if there is some restricted space under counter, this Whirlpool slimline dishwasher has great reviews and comes in a stylish silver colour. A separate fridge and freezer can also take up a lot of space, so two possible alternatives would either be a fridge with an ice box, or if they are more likely to be storing frozen pizzas and ready meals than fresh food, then this Samsung fridge freezer offers more freezer space and comes in graphite, platinum silver and white – perfect for any interior!

If it’s a washing machine they’re short of and, despite living away for 3 years, still don’t know how to use one for themselves, then the Indesit Moon washing machine is ideal. It has one circular control panel with only 5 buttons to master (one of them being the on/off button) and as a result looks very sleek and minimalist, plus they are surprisingly reasonably priced.

If your graduate is moving into a fully furnished house or apartment and you want to add a bit of luxury to their first home, a Samsung wine cooler is ideal and won’t break the bank.

Yes this is a great idea, my eldest just graduated and is moving into a new flat in September and my husband, John had the brilliant idea of holding off on a present and buying furniture/appliances when she moves into her new place.  We have agreed on a washing machine, living room table, cutlery and wardrobe, (she did do really well after all!).

Claire, can you recommend a good washing machine - bear in mind I have done all the washing for the past 20 years.  i do like the indesit moon, but what kind of programmes do you recommend?  what else is out there for perhaps a little bit more?

Thanks,

Mrs M Winsor

Thanks for your comment,

If you are looking for a machine with a few more washing machine-phobe friendly programmes, then I would recommend this Zanussi Jetsystem+ http://tinyurl.com/lw5pbj It has an easy iron programme as I assume your daughter hasn't done much ironing in her time either, a 30 minute quick wash for clothes she might need in a hurry for a big night out, and best of all a duvet programme so she will have no excuse for not keeping her duvet spotless!

Hi, If you are looking to build your own home in the UK, read this article http://www.whatprice.co.uk/building/house.html which has an informative guide to how much each element of the process will cost depending on the size of the property.
