Although the name ‘wine cooler’ does suggest the cooling of wine, this useful little appliance can actually be used to store both red and white wine at their ideal temperatures. Depending on the make and type, the temperature can be adjusted anywhere between 4°c and 21°c.
The ideal temperature for white wine is between 7°c and 10°c for dry whites and champagne, and between 5°c and 8°c for sweeter whites and sparkling white wines. It has become a common misconception that room temperature is best for red wines, however due to the higher average temperature in most modern day homes; room temperature is actually too warm. Red wines should ideally be served between 14°c and 18°c.
Quick cooling and heating can really damage the taste and aroma of a wine, and I’m sure I’m not the only one who has been guilty of putting a bottle of white wine in the freezer in a panic or thinking it is a good idea to balance a bottle of red on the radiator to warm it up.
If you have more bottles of wine than you know what to do with and think your drinking habits could benefit from a wine cooler, I would recommend the Samsung wine cooler RW52DASS. It is a dual zone wine cooler, meaning you can store both red and white wine at their ideal temperatures at the same time, and it has a 52 bottle capacity – that’s your Friday night catered for then!
