How to Friday: how to wash water repellent clothes

There’s the smell of Gortex in the air this month with the looming threat of April showers. This time of year is the time to don your anoraks, cagoules and waterproof clothing as you leave the house - because despite the spring sunshine, you never know just when rain will strike!

Unfortunately waterproof clothing can be difficult to clean so if you’re getting these items out of storage the musty smell may be difficult to remove. Similarly, muddy waterproof hiking gear may be difficult for you to clean.

Indesit washing machines with Outdoor Wear cycle

If you’re looking for a long term solution, look at Indesit washing machines. Some Indesit washing machines (like the Indesit PWE8168S) come with a dedicated Outdoor Wear programme which is specific to cleaning water repellent fabrics such as Gortex.

The cycle will gently spin your waterproofs at 400rpm and 40 degrees. The programme takes two jackets and completes in 46minutes.

If you don’t have an Indesit washing machine with the Outdoor Wear programme wash on a low temperature for a short amount of time, with no detergent. This will ensure the waterproofing isn’t damaged. After washing, simply hang to dry.
