Food blogs

This week I’ve been on the lookout for food bloggers who are good enough to invite along to write a guest post. What I pegged as half an hour of sipping hot chocolate and reclining in my chair reading recipes turned into three hours of trawling the internet looking for someone literate, who updates their blog regularly and can cook.

After all that I’ve got a shortlist of people I’m going to get in touch with but I’ve also got a list of blogs that really stood out and I thought I should share. Some are more famous than others but I would recommend each of them as being worth a look.

80 breakfasts – A blog from a mother in the Philippines. The first thing that caught my eye was the great photos (so great in fact that at first I thought they were stock images). When you get past the pictures there are some good recipes with a cross cultural twist. Ideas vary from the simple and comforting chicken sautéed with cheese and milk to a more complex apple galette that’s getting saved as a favourite on my home PC.

Cookography – There are plenty of things you can say about Luke from Cookography but the most important one is that he seems like a nice guy. What started out as a food blog, turned into a food-photography blog which has turned into a nice balance between photos of food, easy to follow recipes, tips and experiments. I get the impression that he’ll try anything once so expect to find bread cooked in a plant pot and inventive creations like miso broiled salmon.

King Arthur Flour - Written by professional American flour people, the King Arthur Flour blog has quite a following and it’s easy to see why. Almost every post is an idiot proof recipe that combines instructions with lots of images. And when I say lots of images I mean lots of images – around thirty per recipe. If you feel like trying out some recipes from the USA (not all of which involve flour) then this blog comes highly recommended.

Word of Mouth - Putting the Guardian in feels like cheating, after all they are professional writers, but it was only towards the end of my search that I discovered the Word of Mouth blog. It’s free to access (and hopefully because of the way the Guardian is funded it will stay that way) but the content is professional and if you ignore the ads on the side of the page they won’t try to sell you anything. The bottom of every post includes an invitation to respond and the comments sections fill up quickly so if you want to dive into the discourse you can.

Vegging Out - For all things good and right and healthy and locally produced please see Vegging Out. I know some people will be put off by the thought of reading a vegetarian’s blog but if you want to know more about organic food, vegetarian cooking, links to strangely engrossing videos, growing your own and bees then this is for you.

If you have any recommendations for food based blogs feel free to get in touch.
