It’s a question we’re asked on a daily basis – can you reverse the door on this fridge/freezer? The answer is usually yes, and it’s actually a relatively simple task.

Most fridges, freezers and combination fridge freezers have the option to swap the hinges so you can open the door in the opposite direction. This is important if your appliance is located adjacent to a wall which will only allow you to open the door 90 degrees, as often this will prevent you from opening the drawers in the appliance.
Each appliance will be slightly different but I have taken the AEG A75278GA Freezer as an example.
Firstly, always make sure the appliance is unplugged as you don’t want to go up in a blue light! Lay it gently on its back and then follow these instructions:
- Remove the clip-in ventilation grille and the plug from the ventilation grille.
- Remove the bottom hinge.
- Remove the door.
- Unscrew the pin of the bottom hinge and install it on the opposite side, then repeat with the upper hinge.
- Install the door on the upper hinge.
- Clip the ventilation grille back into place.
- Swap the handle to the opposite side of the appliance – remove the handle, unscrew the top handle bracket from the handle rod, unscrew the bottom handle bracket from the door, then unscrew the upper handle bracket from the door.
- Install the handle on the opposite side of the appliance.
- Ensure the door’s front board is parallel to the front board of the top of the appliance.
- When you have repositioned your appliance make sure you wait for at least four hours before reconnecting it to a power socket.
There will obviously be variations on this process with every appliance so make sure you check the manual before you try!
Happy reversing!!
