Tie the kangaroo down, sport, so we can have a bite
|
A week ago I wrote about quirky animal cooking times. Today I’m taking that idea further with how to make a crocodile crunchy or a kangaroo stew. So, before you have a chance to click away in horror, I present five edible Aussie animals. This post is close to my heart as Down Under was once my adopted homeland.
Kangaroo
Now, I know what you’re thinking. Don’t eat Skippy, you’ll yell as I bite into my gourmet Kangaroo burger, but these creatures have been consumed for years by Australia’s indigenous population, and you must want to know what all the fuss is about surely. Per half a kilo of this exclusively Aussie creature, you’ll want to give it 15-20 mins on 200 degrees Celsius. Not too much hotter than the outback, then.
Crocodile
Crocodiles are fearsome predators. You really should think twice before going down to the water’s edge to drink. In this blog though, we’re making the hunter the hunted, and possibly sautéed too. The meat of this terrifying creature has quite a subtle taste. The best method is to cook the beast from frozen for two minutes on either side in a frying pan.
Snake
Slightly easier to handle than a crocodile is a snake, though there is a lot less meat on them and I don’t care much for the slithering either. But if you are in the mood for snacking on a serpent then follow these simple instructions. First, skin and fillet it. Then make a batter. Finally, throw the battered fillets into a big frying pan, giving them 4-6 minutes on each side or until they are golden brown.
Emu
This giant flightless creature tastes more like lean beef than chicken. It’s the second largest bird in the world and can grow up to 2 metres tall. For best results, cooking the bird in a marinade for around 30-60 minutes is ideal. If you don’t fancy eating it, Emu oil can be used to make soaps or even analgesics.
Shark
Deadliest of predators in the sea, shark can also be quite enjoyable served with white wine. 180 degrees in the oven for about 30 minutes should be enough to cook this killer fish. Heavy seasoning is a good idea because the meat is quite bland.

I think that it is important for me to note that just because some animals can be cooked doesn’t mean you should buy or eat them. The sale and consumption of animal products is governed by local and international law and as such you should check this before planning any of the above meals.
