When it comes to installation of your new electric oven or cooker you should ensure it is carried out by a competent person. In the case of hardwiring a powerful electrical appliance it is advised you ask an electrician.
Whilst most single ovens can be plugged in to a 13Amp socket and double ovens and range cookers need wiring to a bigger power source, there is no hard and fast rule to tell whether your appliance needs hardwiring. The only way to make sure is to read the product manual. Some single ovens are very powerful these days and will need to be hardwired to the mains.
Many manufacturers will also deter customers from the temptation of meddling with electrics by not providing a wire – in this case the electrician will provide this for you.
If you do not want to hire an electrician to wire in your oven or cooker, make sure to ask whether it comes with a plug before you buy.
