A new way of THiNQ-ing

Technology. It’s really just amazing when you think about it. Not many species on the planet can create all these tools to make lives easier. Over the last 15 or so years, we’ve seen leaps and bounds that have pushed the envelope when it comes to technological advancements. It’s very noble when it’s used for the betterment of humanity, for example in medicine or science.

However, most people do want to feel the benefits a lot closer to home. If we’ve got it, why not flaunt it?

At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas earlier this year, LG showcased their contribution to the cutting edge of convenience with LG THiNQ. Using wireless internet and smart phones to their advantage, THiNQ will soon be the standard in most of LG’s appliance line.

Simply put, whatever appliance you are using, be it a cooker, washing machine or fridge freezer, you’ll be in the know and in control at all times.

For example, using your phone, you’ll be able to activate your washing machine from wherever you are. Rushed out to work and forgot to turn it on? Not a problem anymore. Plus, LG washing machines will soon be able to scan the local electricity rates. Then, the machine will actually inform you of when the best time to start cleaning is, so you get the cheapest and most efficient rates.

LG ovens run on a similar principle. They offer three cost options of low, middle and high – that take account of the length of cooking cycle and electricity costs. Fridges do it too! They’ll adjust the times of auto-defrost so you’re not wasting any energy.

And when there’s a problem, a diagnostic can be run, and when a fault is found, the error code is relayed to your phone and forwarded to LG’s customer service. They’ll know exactly what the problem is, and be able to deal with it first time with this advanced knowledge. Amazing isn’t it? If you’ve left the fridge door open, you’ll get a message sent to your phone telling you to get back into the kitchen and close it. I’d like to imagine a voice similar to Brian Blessed in ‘Flash Gordon’ in my head when this happens!

These appliances will also display daily, weekly or monthly reports that detail the energy usage of your appliance, consumption and associated costs.

This kind of interaction only serves to improve our time management, and household budget. We’ve got all this advanced technology and I think it’s time we got real use out of it in the home, don’t you?
