Hot and cold fill washing machines - the facts

Hot fill washing machines seem to be a thing of the past as almost all manufacturers are only making cold fill washing machines; certainly all the models we sell are cold fill only.

If your old washing machine used a hot and cold water supply you might be worried about replacing it with a cold fill only washing machine. Don’t be, if you have a hot and cold tap all you have to do is connect the washing machine to the cold tap only and seal off the hot tap with a cap; just to prevent any leaks.

But why are all manufacturers making their washing machines cold fill these days I hear you ask?

Cold fill washing machines are cheaper to produce and help you save energy. This is because with a hot and cold fill washing machine technically twice as much water is heated than is used by the washing machine, so it is much more economical to just draw in cold water and heat only the amount required for the cycle selected. Cold fill machines also increase washing efficiency when using biological detergents and washing at 40 degrees. This is because the enzymes in the detergent work at their optimum level at low temperatures.

So hot is out and cold is in, but don’t worry your new cold fill washing machine will still offer the same great wash performance, with the added bonus of saving you a few pennies on your energy bills!

Why don’t you take a look at our fantastic range of washing machines.

Most washing is done by women; most women don't have hours to waste waiting for one cycle to finish before they do another; I fail to see how today's machines save energy of they are using energy over a longer period AND heating water which would have come hot from the hot tank already heated for showering and washing.; what am I missing here?

"Cold fill washing machines are cheaper to produce"

That seems to me the ONLY reason.

Not so "Eco" if they can't use water from my solar hot water system.

I dont know how gullible people have become and the drivle i have read, if cold wash washing machines are cheaper to produce someone should tell Meile, the cold water only fill is a con by the power companies and you cannot effectivlely wash a workers clothes at 30 degrees and with all this hype about low temperature washes the water is barely hot enough to disolve the washing gel capsules so how the hell can it wash your clothes properly.
The amount of times my wife has had to rewash clothes because the water is NOT hot enough to disolve the powder and it says it on the packet it will work at the temperature stated.
I'M  AFFRAID ITS ALL  A  BIG  CON

I agee with Alistair Wilson. All a con.  My Bosch has been rubbish compared to our previous hot n cold fill. We cant use gel cos the water doesnt dissolve it.  It sinks to the bottom and leaves a slimmy substance which collects around the rubber seal. Then it washes it onto the clothes. The amount of times ive had to rewash things is unbelievable. Its all because of this cold fill nonesense. Even with the powder tabs it collects this slimmy scum altho not as quick. Bosch answer is to clean the machine after every 10 washes by running a 90 Deg wash three times. Oh yeah, whats the point of that!!!! My Bosch is broken now and I just dont know what to do.

Cold  wash machines are a con. They take much longer to wash, and never come out properly clean. Can't beat the hot fill machine I had for twenty years. I now have a tank full of hot water in the airing cupboard doing nothing. Who ever heard of washing cloths in cold water.

My washing machine is sited a few inches from the gas boiler. How stupid it would be to have to heat the water using electricity.

Never had a decent wash since cold fill machines came about, my mum has a hot filled one and I love the smell that comes from it as the clothes get washed and everything comes out clean, I have an expensive heap of rubbish that never brings anything out clean, Bring back hot filled machines, I cannot also see how it is cheaper I have a condenser boiler as soon as my hot tap goes on hot water flows so why use electric to heat up a washing machine - ridiculous.

Hot and cold fill washing machines - the facts

What a joke.. the lady that's written this article hasn't got a clue of how a hot fill machine works.
She states "hot and cold fill washing machine technically twice as much water is heated than is used by the washing machine"

If she still reads this page i'll explain to her..
Hot fill machines have 2 fills, both hot and cold.
They let hot water in ONLY when hot water is needed which is the wash, all the rinses are done with cold water.
The pros:
1) water already hot, no need to wait to warm it up, faster wash.
2) much reduced limescale in the machine as the water is already heated
3) two less things to break, heater element and the circuit driving it.
4) cheaper to heat the water with gas boiler then electricity
(around  £50 a year cheaper according to which magazine)
5) less limescale=longer lasting machine ( my personal opinion )

help me save money ? more like help the manufacturers save some.

If you have a long pipe run from the tank on the hot water, you are filling the machine with cold from the pipe and filling the pipe with hot which then wastes heat to the atmosphere.

Any article suffixed by "the facts" had better be certain that the "facts" are right; and here they are fundamentally wrong.

Using a modern gas-fired condensing boiler to heat 50 litres of water from a ground water temperature of 10 oC (typical temp of the mains)to 30 oC would cost a typical homeowner something like 3.9 pence. To do the same with electricity would cost you about 12.8 pence (all dependent upon tariffs).  Ergo, a hot feed connection saves about 70%.

The only way the article can be correct is if there are considerable inefficiencies in the storage of the hot water.

“This is because with a hot and cold fill washing machine technically twice as much water is heated than is used by the washing machine” - really Ms Brearly?

This would only be correct for a poorly designed system and is complete nonsense for a home using a combi-boiler.

My advice is to install a thermostatic mixing valve on the feed to machine.  Pay no more than £60.  Set the valve to 30 oC to hold off the electric element on the washing machine.

I know it's gauche to say on a thread, but for what it's worth, energy engineering is my area of expertise.

I don't want a cold fill washing machine.  Why should I have to pay £999 for an ISE W288 eco from Sweden when manufacturers in this country could make hot fill washing machines.  Cold fill washing machines are not eco friendly and they cost us the earth in electricity charges.

I need a hot and cold fill machine....

FACT......

i still have my coal fire which heats up my water....
I burn just about anything i can for free to get free heat and hot water
Cos of above i do most of my washing on 60c or higher...

Julian

I am in exactly the same position as yourself and many others.

Especially in Spring/Summer/Autumn months my coal fire is lit 24/7 to keep the house warm via the central heating.

So any other uses for hot water like washing dishes, shower/bath and of course washing clothes/bedclothes and heavens knows what else is FREE.

Luckily I have still got a working dual fill machine and will pay anything to get it repaired before buy a 'cold fill only' one. But eventually something on it will break down that can't be replaced any more.

Why should these people feel they have a God given right to tell us what we should do by restricting the market choice.

Rant over.

I have just picked up a brochure from my local independent appliance supplier for a manufacturer called STATESMAN APPLIANCES. All cheer they have a model XT6-1230W  with a hot & cold fill option. It only comes up as energy rating A but as we are all complaining that we can not use our already heated water perhaps it's A+ for us.Another point that needs to be taken into account is the increase of bed mites as a temperature of 60c is needed to kill them and Scabies.

i have a miele w3204, only have 2 rinses on every wash you have to use a small amount of washing powder or their is soap left in the clothes the rinse cycle takes 26mins its like another wash cycle and the clothes don't smell fresh any more, you should have a choice hot and cold fill or cold only
