Day One....

So, it’s my first day in the white goods trade and I’ve already been asked what my favourite appliance is. Favourite appliance...I’m not usually the type of girl who uses a washing machine, never mind has a favourite. Shoes, perhaps, lipstick, most likely, handbag – definitely!

After recoiling in horror I took to browsing the pages of Appliancesonline.co.uk and was utterly surprised at the scale and variety of appliances on offer.  As overwhelming as it was, I soon got to grips with the accessible website and found myself delving into the unknown...warming drawers? Surely I’ve misread that, but no, this contraption actually exists, not only this, with my new found knowledge of all that is ‘the white goods industry’, they appear to be a spiffing addition to anyone’s kitchen. It keeps your food warm if you’re late home, warms plates in anticipation of a wholesome meal and even looks sleek with its polished stainless steel finish. Gone is the hostess trolley of the 1970s that an auntie of mine won’t part with, say hello to the warming drawer (SMEG CT15-2).

I must admit, other than a George Formby grill (yes I know that’s not its real name) and a smoothie maker (one in a long line of fads), I have never bought a domestic appliance. Shameful or apt for a 22 year old, you tell me? Regardless of this overarching weakness, I’m here working at DRL (the appliance specialist) and I will fit it with these self-proclaimed nerds.

Luckily enough, the warming drawer was only the first of countless products to catch my eye....the cool SMEG fridges that looked as if they came straight out of Friends (Smeg Right Hand Hinge FAB30QP Fridge Freezer Freestanding Cream), the impressive range cookers that the wannabes have on ‘Come Dine With Me’ (Stoves Richmond 1100DFT), they’re all here at appliancesonline.co.uk. I’m utterly spoilt for choice, and that’s not like me!

If I had to pick a favourite it would have to be one those American style fridge freezer combos with adjacent doors rather than one on top of the other...trend setter for sure. Not only does this bad boy have the looks, it produces ice and/or cold water on demand. C’mon, who has the time to wait around for a tap to run cold? Convenient and sophisticated, perfect for fashionistas and families alike (LG GWL207FSQA).

After all the excitement of my first day, I reflect and find that I’ve most certainly learnt something today, not just that the stylish chimney cooker hood (Baumatic BT9.3GL) in my student flat served a purpose other than decoration but that appliances can be interesting and dare I say it, fun...well they’re certainly interesting.

On a more pessimistic note, I fear the day my next credit card bill falls onto the welcome mat.....x amount spent at appliancesonline.co.uk, forget pessimism - bring on the warming drawer!
