How to Wash...A Washing Machine

Don’t worry, I haven’t gone insane... yet. Cleaning your washing machine is something that most people never even contemplate doing, and I didn’t until I worked at Appliances Online.

Unfortunately there isn’t a ‘washing machines’ washer, but this is a fun and rewarding task that ensures your washing machine performs to the standard that it was made to do. Here’s a crazy fun fact for you, did you know by not cleaning your filter you could turn an A energy efficient appliance into a D with repeated use consuming more and more electricity? You do now!

Follow these easy steps, and have your machine as crisp and clean as all those white shirts it’s given you.

Step 1
Select a hot wash, include detergent and run it on empty. Non-biological powders do not work well on lower temperatures, so a hot wash will help wash away and excess.

Step 2
Whilst your machine is busy cleaning itself, why not take the time to grab a wet cloth and give the outside a good clean. You’d be surprised how dirty the outside can get, especially if your washer is white.

Step 3
After this maintenance wash, and any future washes try and leave the door slightly ajar for a few hours. It allows air to get into the machine and prevents any smelly odours from building up.

Step 4
Make sure to clean your filter and coin trap if you have either. The coin trap can be slightly messy as my one tends to retain water. I like to wash mine at the sink for cleaner results.

Step 5
Potentially one of the most dirtiest places on your machine will be the detergent drawer. You only have to look at my before and after to see the difference. Most are removable, and it’s easily cleaned with soapy warm water.

Whether you like to give your washing machine the full service every month or not, manufacturers still recommend a monthly maintenance wash to kill off bacteria and prevent mould and grease.

Washing machines have spent lifetimes ensuring we all have clean, fresh clothing for all the family. Let’s reach out and extend that kindness back to our beloved appliances!
